Behind The Story

This story is inspired by true events that delve into the unexplained—the realm of the supernatural. Many things in life defy explanation, but they demand expression, and this book is my attempt to give voice to those mysterious experiences.

It all began when I was 11. My father would occasionally tune into HCJB, an old Christian missionary radio station that had been broadcasting in Ecuador since 1930, where I grew up. Among its sermons and classical music, I vividly remember hearing Gregorian chants one day. The moment I heard them, I was transported—taken to another place and time. Vivid memories came to me, not as mere imagination, but with a depth that engaged all my senses. It felt like a trance, and in that moment, I was no longer in my room but part of a brotherhood, deeply connected to the church.

From then on, the chants had a strange effect on me, pulling fragments of what felt like a past life to the surface. Among these memories, there was a woman—her presence vivid, profound, and impossible to forget. She felt like a part of me, connected to a time that no longer existed. But I was just a child, and I kept these experiences to myself, too embarrassed to share, dismissing them as simple imagination.

As I grew, this feeling—this sense of being connected to another time—lingered but faded with the passage of youth. I tried to blend in with my friends, but I always felt separated, as if something far greater was waiting beyond the ordinary rhythms of life. I was obsessed with time, often writing notes to my future self, as if to remind myself of things I couldn’t quite grasp in the present.

When I was 17, the feeling subsided, and life moved forward. At 19, I moved to the United States, to Florida, where I stayed with my grandmother, who ran a jewelry business. During those early days, my uncle Joe took me to pass the time by buying magazines. One afternoon, as we left a store, a tall security guard with striking white hair and large glasses approached me. He seemed to study me intensely. My uncle introduced us, and after a brief exchange, the guard pulled me aside.

“I need to talk to you,” he said, with a strange sense of urgency. Reluctantly, I followed. He told me his grandmother had been a healer in Cuba, a woman with special gifts, and he had inherited some of those abilities. He looked at me and said, “You are an old soul.”

At first, I didn’t take him seriously—I was a young man, new to the country, and saw no reason to give much weight to his words. Then, he asked to see my palm. Out of curiosity, I extended my hand. He studied it for a moment, and then, as if struck by a revelation, he exclaimed, “Aha! I knew it!”

He continued, “I can see who you were in your past life. You were part of the church, a friar or monk—perhaps Franciscan. You lived in torment.”

His words jolted me. I had never told anyone about the memories, about the inexplicable feelings that had haunted me since childhood. He couldn’t have known—it was my third day in the United States, and no one here knew anything about my past. I tried to dismiss it, but his words stayed with me, planting seeds of questions I couldn’t shake.

That encounter reaffirmed the sense I had carried all my life—that I had lived before, that I had loved before. And that woman, the one I could never forget, had been part of that past.

Years later, in my thirties, I had a vivid dream—a fragment of my past life. I was, indeed, a member of the church, and I had fallen in love with someone I was never supposed to. A woman accused of witchcraft. A woman I couldn’t save. A woman I had vowed to love forever.

For years, I kept these experiences locked away, unsure of what to make of them. But as I approached the age of 48, the weight of it became too much to bear. It was as if someone, or something, was compelling me to write. And so, I did—pouring my emotions into this novel, perhaps as a love letter to the one I lost in another time, or to the one who still waits for me somewhere.

This book was not written with logic but with feeling. I chose locations and characters by instinct, trusting in the emotions that have guided me all my life. It is a story inspired by a love I once felt and still feel today.
